Our story began in 2014 with a deeply personal mission: to preserve the cherished memories of a wedding through the timeless art of Peranakan beadwork.
Where It All Began
In 2014, driven by a desire to capture the essence of life's most precious milestones, I crafted my very first pair of beaded shoes. Rather than just creating a fashion statement, I wanted to weave lasting tributes for the most important women in my life. I made special pairs for my mother, my mother-in-law, and myself — each bead meticulously placed to honour family, connection, and tradition.
A beaded shoe vamp can preserve memories for many decades. We simply need to rebuild the shoe base using the same beaded vamp, allowing it to be passed down gracefully to the next generation.
Learning from a Master:
The Art of May Lim Siew Seng
No journey into authentic Nyonya beadwork in Penang is complete without guidance from those who carry the torch of tradition. My mentor is Penang's very own master Nyonya shoe beader, May Lim Siew Seng.
At 80 years old, of proud Peranakan descent, Auntie May creates beaded shoes defined by intricate, distinctive patterns that reflect generations of cultural history. Under her watchful eye, I learned that true heritage craft cannot be rushed. In those early days, completing a single pair of beaded vamps took a full two months of patient, needle-by-needle dedication.
Standing the Test of Time
The hours of labor were more than worth it. Today, looking back after 11 years, those original beaded shoes still look as vibrant and stunning as they did the day they were finished.
This remarkable durability forms the core philosophy of our craft. Because a fine beaded vamp can endure for decades, it represents true sustainability in fashion. When the structure of the shoe eventually wears down, the precious beaded art can be carefully detached and re-mounted onto a fresh shoe base. It is a brilliant way to ensure that family heirlooms — and cultural traditions — live on across generations.
Continuing the Legacy
Today, our mission extends far beyond making shoes. We are dedicated to sharing our skills, material sources, and hard-earned experience with anyone passionate about keeping this magnificent heritage craft alive.
